What to Do Before Dropping Off Your Computer for Repair

Bringing in a computer or laptop for service? Here is a quick guide to backing up important files, removing the lock-screen PIN or password, and bringing the right equipment so your arranged drop-off goes smoothly.

When you bring a laptop or desktop in for service - whether it is for virus removal, operating system updates, or general troubleshooting - taking a few quick steps beforehand helps protect your files and keeps the repair moving.

1. Back Up Your Important Files

Most standard repairs do not affect personal documents, but it is always smart to keep a separate copy of your photos, tax forms, and important records.

Cloud Storage

If you use Microsoft OneDrive, Apple iCloud, Dropbox, or another cloud-storage service, confirm that your important folders are actively syncing. Verify that the files can be opened from another device or through the provider’s website.

External Storage

You can also copy your main user folders to a USB flash drive or external hard drive.

If you suspect ransomware or active malware, contact Merritt IT before connecting an external backup drive.

2. Remove the Lock-Screen PIN or Password

Before dropping off your computer, temporarily remove its local Windows or Mac sign-in PIN or password so Merritt IT can restart, test, and troubleshoot the device without delays.

Restore your preferred sign-in protection after the repair is complete.

Do not send passwords by text, email, or through the website intake form.

3. Bring the Right Equipment

For a laptop, bring the device and its power adapter.

For most Windows desktop computers, bring the computer tower only. You can usually leave the monitor, keyboard, mouse, and external cables at home.

Contact Merritt IT before bringing an Apple desktop or unfamiliar hardware so we can confirm which display, power, and input equipment will be required.

4. Arrange the Drop-Off

Drop-offs are by arrangement only. Call or Text Us at (236) 457-6371, or use the support request form to arrange a time.
